Our History: A Century of Growing Together
Rooted in our community since 1922.
For more than a century, Pincher Creek Co-op has been part of the story of southwestern Alberta. Built on the values of cooperation, community, and local ownership, our history began with a group of local farmers and ranchers who believed they could accomplish more by working together.
Today, we continue to build on that legacy, serving our members, customers, and communities with pride.
How It All Began
The story of Pincher Creek Co-op began in 1922, during a challenging period for agriculture following the First World War. Local farmers and ranchers recognized the need for a business that would help them market their agricultural products and strengthen their position in the local economy.
On January 7, 1922, a resolution was passed at a meeting of the Pincher Creek branch of the United Farmers of Alberta to establish a local cooperative. The association received its charter in June of that year, officially marking the beginning of what would become a longstanding part of the community.
The founding members understood the power of working together. By combining their efforts and resources, they created an organization designed to serve local agricultural producers and the wider community for generations to come.
Growing With Our Community
From its early beginnings, Pincher Creek Co-op continued to grow and expand its services to meet the needs of the region. Agriculture remained at the heart of the business, but the Co-op soon became involved in a variety of commercial ventures to serve its members and customers.
Over the decades, the Co-op expanded into seed cleaning, lumber, groceries, dry goods, automotive services, and other essential offerings. Each new venture reflected the changing needs of the community and the Co-op's commitment to providing convenient, locally accessible products and services.
In 1927, a new seed cleaning plant was built to accommodate the growing operation. In the years that followed, the Co-op continued to expand its presence throughout the region, including the community of Cowley.
As Pincher Creek grew, so did the Co-op — adapting to new opportunities while remaining connected to the agricultural roots that inspired its founding.

More Than a Place to Shop
At the heart of Pincher Creek Co-op has always been the cooperative model: a business built to serve its members and community.
Unlike a traditional business, a cooperative is owned by its members. This means our members have a stake in the organization and a voice in its future. The cooperative approach helps keep our focus on the people and communities we serve.
For generations, members, employees, directors, local producers, and customers have all played a role in shaping the Co-op's story. Their support and dedication have helped the organization grow through changing times, new challenges, and new opportunities.
Our commitment to community extends beyond the products and services we offer. We are proud to support local initiatives, organizations, and events that help make southwestern Alberta a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
Looking Toward the Future
While much has changed since 1922, the values that inspired the founding of Pincher Creek Co-op remain at the centre of who we are.
We continue to look for new ways to serve our members, support our local economy, and meet the evolving needs of our communities. As we move forward, we carry with us the hard work, determination, and cooperative spirit of the people who built this organization.
Our history is more than a collection of dates and milestones. It is the story of neighbours working together, generations supporting one another, and a community building something that lasts.
Thank you to our members, customers, employees, and communities for being part of our story. Here's to continuing to grow together for generations to come!
